Moving Weekend, Art Shows, & Teaching News | Mutant Mondays #3 /January 31, 2025 by Edgar Fabián Frías

Surprise! This week's Mutant Monday is coming to you early - I'll be in the midst of moving this weekend. If you send me messages in the coming days or have sent me one recently and don't hear back immediately, know that I'm temporarily lost in a sea of boxes but will resurface soon!

A CalArts faculty ID card with blue and white design on a red background. The card features the CalArts logo in white text on a blue gradient banner.

It's official! My new CalArts special faculty ID - ready to begin this exciting chapter in Performance.

CalArts Announcement

I'm thrilled to announce my appointment as special faculty in performance at CalArts! Teaching my dream class with an incredible cohort of students marks a significant milestone in my career. This personal invitation from such a historic art institution feels particularly meaningful.

This journey wouldn't be possible without my supportive network - thank you for advocating for me both publicly and privately. Your support continues to make a profound impact.

Serendipitously, my first teaching day aligned with the Lunar New Year, adding an extra layer of significance to this new beginning.

Art Exhibition News

Emergence' (2023) - this archival canvas print is now available at Last Projects' Artist Relief Fundraiser Exhibition.

I'm honored to share that my artwork "Emergence" - originally featured in my exhibition Museum of Multidimensional Mutant Maps at the Philosophical Research Society and highlighted in Kira Xonorika's essay on Indigenous Futurisms for the Hyundai Artlab - has been donated as an archival canvas print to the Artist Relief Fundraiser Exhibition at Last Projects.

The show opens this Saturday, February 1st, from 7-11 pm (though I'll likely miss the opening due to moving day!). If you want to add this piece to your collection while supporting displaced artists in our community, please visit the gallery or contact Ilona Berger at Last Projects.

See my art at Plateforme Paris for 'Dieu est Algorithme' (God is Algorithm), opening February 20th - an exhibition exploring AI, spirituality, and magic.

In other exciting news, my art was curated into "Dieu est Algorithme," an exhibition exploring the fascinating intersection of AI algorithms with spirituality and magic. The show runs from February 20th to March 9th, 2025, at Plateforme Paris in France. I'm honored to be featured alongside remarkable artists like Zach Blas, Anne Horel, Juan Covelli, Santiago Torres, Sylvain Manigaud, Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos, Alfredo Salazar Caro, Sofia Crespo, Gregory Chatonsky, Tabita Rezaire, and Regina Demina. If you happen to be in Paris, I'd love to see your exhibition photos!

Resonant Transmissions (Link Roundup)

  • With the horrific racist af ICE raids happening across the country, I am feeling called to share this resource list for undocumented immigrants and families created by the National Latinx Psychological Association. Please support these organizations. Here’s also how you can support your immigrant communities during an ICE raid.

  • The ACLU has a petition to Protect Trans Care Now in the United States. Please sign it. Please share it. I also appreciated reading this article about moving from being an “ally” to an “accomplice” for LGBTQIA+ folks by the ACLU of Kansas.

  • I’ve been following the story of the late artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres and his artwork on display at the Smithsonian. From the initial public outcry that labeled it as an example of “Queer Erasure," reflecting the acceptance, silencing, and normalization of homophobia enforced by the current government, to more recent articles claiming that this is all being “blown out of proportion.” I'm curious about your thoughts on this!

Hello, my name is Edgar Fabián Frías. I am a multi-hyphenate: a multidisciplinary artist, educator, somatic psychotherapist (LMFT), and brujx (or witch) based in Los Angeles.

My artwork has been exhibited internationally, and I’ve served as a visiting artist, educator, and workshop facilitator at various universities, art museums, and nonprofits.

In addition to my professional roles, I have many hobbies and interests that I love sharing across my platforms.

This blog is part of my artist website, where I dive deeper into my creative journey and share insights.

Thank you for being part of my journey!
