About Edgar

Edgar Fabián Frías is a nonbinary Wixárika and Latinx multidisciplinary artist, curator, educator, brujx, and psychotherapist based in Los Angeles. Their practice moves fluidly across installation, digital painting, video, performance, sound, social practice, ceremony, GIFs, memes, and public art; blending technology, spirituality, and collective healing through the lenses of Indigenous Futurism, queer and trans cosmologies, and data justice.

Drawing from their Wixárika lineage and training in psychotherapy, Frías investigates how ancestral technologies: divination, dreamwork, and ceremony, can be brought into dialogue with contemporary systems like open-source software, mapping, and algorithmic design.

Central to their practice is Nierika, a sacred Wixárika technology for world-making and visionary perception, which Frías mobilizes as both methodology and cosmology. Their immersive works operate as portals, spells, maps, shields, and mirrors, invoking re-enchantment while addressing the entanglements of land, identity, and technology. Whether visualizing algorithmic harm through Indigenous iconography, creating spellcasting memes, or collaborating with communities to reimagine public space, their art centers resiliency, radical imagination, and reciprocal ways of knowing.

Currently in Berlin as a fellow in the Mensch Maschine program, a collaboration between the Akademie der Künste (AdK) and EWerk Luckenwalde, and residing at the internationally artist residency Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Frías is developing new work in dialogue with an archive at the Humboldt Forum and Ethnological Museum of Berlin.

Frías holds an MFA in Art Practice (Cum Laude) from UC Berkeley, a Graduate Certificate in New Media from the Berkeley Center for New Media, and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Cum Laude) from Portland State University, with a focus on Interpersonal Neurobiology and Somatic Psychotherapy. They are Special Faculty in Performance at CalArts and serve on the LA County Department of Arts and Culture's Public Artist Council.

In 2024, their work was selected for permanent preservation on the moon's surface via the Arch Lunar Art Archive aboard the Odysseus Lander spacecraft, making them part of a rarefied group of artists whose work now exists beyond Earth. Their work has been presented at institutions across the globe, from the Vincent Price Art Museum and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA to the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Oregon Contemporary, Palm Springs Art Museum, MOCA Jacksonville, the Mexicali Biennial, and ArtBo, among others. Internationally recognized as a practicing witch and spiritual practitioner, their work is featured in Amy Hale's Beyond the Supernatural: Magic in Contemporary Art (Tate Publishing, 2026).
