About Edgar

Edgar Fabián Frías (b. 1983 in Huntington Park, CA) is a nonbinary Wixárika and Latinx multidisciplinary artist, curator, educator, and psychotherapist based in Los Angeles. Their practice investigates how ancestral technologies—divination, dreamwork, and ceremony—converge with computation, data justice, and digital world-making. Working through the lenses of Indigenous Futurism and queer cosmologies, Frías mobilizes Nierika (a sacred Wixárika technology) to generate immersive installations, video art, digital painting, and ritual performances that operate as portals, shields, and tools for collective re-enchantment.

In 2026, Frías received the prestigious Mensch Maschine Fellowship, awarded by the Akademie der Künste (AdK) in collaboration with E-WERK Luckenwalde, completing a residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin while conducting archival research in dialogue with the Humboldt Forum and the Ethnological Museum of Berlin. In 2024, their digital work was selected for permanent lunar preservation via the Arch Lunar Art Archive aboard the Odysseus lander, situating their practice beyond Earth.

Frías’s work is featured in Dr. Amy Hale’s definitive survey Magic: Beyond the Supernatural in Contemporary Art (Tate Publishing, 2026). Their work has been exhibited at the Vincent Price Art Museum, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), Palm Springs Art Museum, Oregon Contemporary, and the Mexicali Biennial, among others. Their work is preserved in the collections of the Arch Lunar Art Archive, Museum of Crypto Art (MOCA), and the Tara Digital Collective.

Frías holds an MFA in Art Practice (Cum Laude) from UC Berkeley, a Graduate Certificate in New Media from the Berkeley Center for New Media, and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Cum Laude) from Portland State University. They serve on the board of the Archive of Healing (in partnership with UCLA) and have served as Special Faculty in Performance at CalArts and on the LA County Department of Arts and Culture Public Artist Council . Their practice has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, Vogue, GQ, ELLE, Hyperallergic, Taschen, and Terremoto.
