Have you ever worked so hard to prove yourself that you barely had time to ask whether the space you were in was actually supporting you?
Maybe you’ve been waiting to feel qualified enough to apply for an opportunity. Maybe you’ve accomplished things you once dreamed about, but still feel like someone is going to discover you don’t belong. Or maybe you’re exhausted by the feeling that you have to give more, know more, and do more just to be taken seriously.
In this episode of Your Art Is a Spell, I want to open up a different conversation about imposter syndrome. Not another reminder to “just be confident,” but an invitation to get curious about the doubt itself: Where did it come from? Whose expectations are you carrying? And what becomes possible when you stop treating your sense of inadequacy as the whole truth about you?
A Different Way to Understand Self-Doubt
I made this episode because I want us to have more options than constantly trying to fix ourselves.
Through personal reflections and experiences from my life as an artist and psychotherapist, I explore the relationship between our inner doubts and the environments in which we learn to understand our worth. I ask what we might notice when we look beyond individual confidence and consider questions of power, access, identity, and belonging.
This conversation is especially close to my heart for those of us who have felt underestimated, excluded, or expected to be grateful for less. I want to make room for the complexity of those experiences without making self-doubt another thing we shame ourselves for having.
You don’t need another assignment in becoming a more acceptable version of yourself. This episode offers an opportunity to consider what it could mean to build self-trust on your own terms.
What You Can Take From This Conversation
Without giving away the personal stories or the full discussion, here are some of the questions this episode invites you to explore:
How can you begin distinguishing your own desires from the expectations you’ve learned to meet?
What might your relationship with work, money, and opportunity look like if you took your contributions more seriously?
What’s the difference between growing your skills and endlessly trying to prove that you deserve to be somewhere?
How can support and community help you imagine possibilities that are difficult to see alone?
What could investing in yourself mean beyond simply pushing yourself to do more?
My hope is that you leave with a different way of listening to yourself. Not the pressure to become fearless overnight, but more room to question the stories that have kept you small—and more permission to consider what you actually want.
For Anyone Waiting to Feel Ready
If you’re an artist, a creative person, or someone standing at the edge of a change, I made this conversation with you in mind.
You don’t have to arrive feeling confident. You don’t have to have your next move figured out. Bring the hesitation, the frustration, the ambition you sometimes feel embarrassed to admit. There’s room for all of it here.
