Why I identify as a “mutant”

I often share in podcast interviews, articles, and in personal conversations that I am a “mutant.” I’ve had the opportunity, when asked by others, to state what that means for me and why it’s an important part of my multifaceted identities. I thought it makes sense for me to have a written statement about this as well in case anyone coming onto my website might have a question or concern about me seeing myself in this way.

Below are the different reasons why the word “mutant” feels sacred to me. Why it fits me and my character like a glove. Why it is political stance, a witchy moment of spellcasting, and a visionary orientation towards life itself.

First off, what is a “mutant”

The word “mutant” comes from the proto Indo-European root word “mei” which means to “change, go, move.” (source) It is a process that has been named in biology as a change of state, characteristic, or species. It is usually seen as a process that involves DNA and some invisible forces (or fields as Rupert Sheldrake calls them) in nature.

My sun sign is in Gemini

Gemini is a mutable sign, which means that it is not fixed. It is fickle, fanciful, context-dependent, and flexible. Being a Gemini means that I have a passion for learning, for growing, for wanting to know just a little bit about everything. It’s fueled my passion for expanding into different disciplines, for not getting “stuck” within just one career, job, or even type of work and for giving myself permission to pivot, to change, to start over, whenever, however, forever.
