Hechizo Tuutú, 2023
9-minute “art spell” showcased on the SalesForce Tower in San Francisco throughout the month of June for Pride 2023. In collaboration with Jim Campbell’s Studio (Day for Night, 2018) and in partnership with Boston Properties.
The artwork's title is "Flower Spell" in both Spanish and Wixárika. It showcases a vibrant blend of psychedelic visuals created using generative art technology. The imagery is complemented by animated tsikuri (also known as "Eye of God"), a bouncing Kauyumari (our blue deer sibling), and flags representing LGBTQIA2S+ communities, including distinct trans and nonbinary flags. Additionally, it features a flag representing the five sacred directions of the Wixárika community. The video incorporates visuals from a performance ritual created in collaboration with author and witch Gaby Herstik. This collaboration took place during Edgar's artist residency at Coaxial Arts Foundation in Los Angeles in June 2022.
In Edgar Fabián Frías' art spell video, performance ritual, animation, and generative art converge to embody a profound intention. This spell is meticulously crafted to facilitate cleansing, the reclamation of power, and the assertion of agency over one's own life. It serves as a visionary catalyst, interweaving indigenous forms of magic, in order to transmute the fear, pain, grief, and sadness that accompany the lived experience of being an LGBTQIA2S+ person in America, where our communities face legislative acts of discrimination, propagated hate, violence, and the criminalization of our existence. Edgar Fabián Frías' artistic creation invites viewers to confront and transcend these adversities, fostering resilience, healing, and the cultivation of new possibilities.
Salesforce Tower is 1,070 feet tall with 61 stories and 1.4 million square feet of office space. (source) Salesforce Tower is the tallest building in San Francisco, surpassing the height of the Transamerica Pyramid. It is also one of the tallest buildings in the United States, ranking among the top twenty tallest buildings in the country.
